“When bankers get together for dinner, they discuss art. When artists get together for dinner, they discuss money.” That was the Oscar Wilde quote on everyone’s mind last night, when CULTURED editor-in-chief Sarah Harrelson and Legacy Investing co-founder and 2024 Young Collector Daniel English gathered an intimate group of insiders for dinner at Jean’s. The prescient adage was printed on bookmarks and nestled inside copies of Michael Craig-Martin’s On Being an Artist, a gift for everyone from English.
Around the table sat leaders across the fields of art, finance, and real estate—including Frieze’s Julie Kim, Wells Group founder George Wells, Art Intelligence global director Rick Cappellazzo, designer and author Jesse LeCavalier, Salon founder Jordan Huelskamp Forman, Gambino Group founder Carl Gambino, UOVO’s Cyril Pietrafesa, and Hello Alfred CEO Marcela Sapone.
Talk of both art and money abounded in equal measure during a meal of oysters, beef tartare, and wood-grilled chicken, kicked off with remarks by English and Harrelson. When the evening came to an end, guests spilled out into the street to continue the conversation with a limited-edition CULT100 tote in hand—filled with copies of the issue, Oribe Gold Lust shampoos and conditioners, Michael Findlay’s The Value of Art, and, of course, Craig-Martin's On Being an Artist. With so much reading under arm, the pressure was on to prepare for the next great meeting of the minds.
